Nurses throw couple wedding at hospital chapel after mom-to-be's water breaks at 23 weeks

A bride, whose water broke when she was just 23 weeks pregnant, assumed that the wedding date she had set with her fiancé would have to be postponed after she was ordered to bed rest in the hospital. Instead, nurses at CHI Health St. Elizabeth in Lincoln, Nebraska planned an elaborate ceremony in just a week at the hospital's chapel.

Even though Katie Rubottom-Nitt had to be wheeled to the chapel on Wednesday, the bride told KOLN that it didn’t feel like she was getting married in a hospital because of the preparations the staff had made.

Rubottom-Nitt and Richard Nitt got engaged in July after two years together and expected to be married as soon as possible. According to Rubottom-Nitt, they "randomly set a date," however, due to pregnancy complications, Rubottom-Nitt learned she had to remain at the hospital on bed rest until she gives birth to her son.

Thanks to the nurses at CHI Health St. Elizabeth, Rubottom-Nitt's wedding went off without a hitch.

"There's a food list going around, and then you know ‘Oh so and so is bringing this,’ and a nurse went and bought my bouquet today,” Rubottom-Nitt told KOLN.

Some members of the staff made the wedding cake, and one nurse even purchased Rubottom-Nitt her wedding gown.

"I felt like that was the least I could do, was to order her a gown that she liked to that she felt beautiful,” nurse Sarah Jacobs said.

As the couple's families and friends piled into the hospital's chapel, along with a few members of the nursing staff, both Rubbottom-Nitt and her groom were overcome with emotions.

"It's just more happy and exciting than anything right now,” said Rubottom-Nitt.

"I'm flabbergasted with a bunch of feelings right now, I know that I’m happy,” Nitt said.

"It's really nice to finally feel like we belong somewhere,” Rubottom-Nitt said.
