Nova's Soda Pop Candy Shop celebrates 517 Day with games, music
ADRIAN — With Adrian being in the 517 area code and this past Tuesday being May 17 — or 5/17 — Nova's Soda Pop Candy Shop owner Dave Spencely thought it was a good time to have a 517 Party.
The idea came from Toledo, which celebrates 419 Day on April 19, said Spencely's friend and event co-planner Pam Felver.
"Why can't we do a 517 Day?" Felver said Tuesday in the parking lot outside the store at 105 E. Church St. in downtown Adrian.
The party was part of the Tuesdays at Nova's series, Spencely said.
There was live music by Gramberry Jam, a scavenger hunt, Hot Wheels car races, a best-looking pet contest, free popcorn and pop tasting — the store sells a wide variety of flavors and brands, not just what's usually at grocery stores and restaurants. Hospice of Lenawee provided cornhole boards, little cellphone charging cords and information about its upcoming 40th anniversary.
The scavenger hunt sent people around downtown Adrian to find 10 "517" signs. If a participating business was closed, the sign would be in their storefront window, but if they were open, the sign could be somewhere inside, Spencely said. The sign at Nova's was in one of the pop coolers. Participants had to solve clues such as "great smells and great tastes" and "what's the scoop — utterly delicious" — to figure out which businesses had the signs.
The next Tuesday's at Nova's will be on June 14 and will have a flag theme because it's Flag Day, Spencley said.
