WORCESTER — The summer-in-May weekend cleared the way for early appearances of shorts, T-shirts and kiddie pools.

The thermometer climbed to record-tying highs on Saturday and Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

The temperature in Worcester hit 88 degrees Saturday. That ties the highest reading for any May 21.

The last time the thermometer climbed that high on that date was 1975, according to the National Weather Service.

The record books needed another update on Sunday, when the temperature reached 90 degrees. That tied the mark for May 22 (1911, 1992).

The forecast calls for cooler weather during the week, with highs in the 70.
