Norwalk boys, girls place fifth at mixed best ball event

Aug. 16—HURON TWP. — The Norwalk boys and girls golf teams competed on Monday in the inaugural mixed best ball tournament hosted by Huron at Thunderbird North golf course.

The host Tigers won the team tournament with a 329 score. That total is the sum of the four best pairings' best ball scores for their 18-hole rounds.

On each hole, the better score in a given pair was the score that counted toward the team total.

Avon also finished at 329, but Huron won the tiebreaker by having the better fifth golfing pair score.

For Norwalk, which placed fifth overall among the 12 teams, it combined to shoot a 350.

On the boys side, Avery Scheel led the Truckers with an 82, while Brayson Malson added an 85. Ethan Brown was next with a 92, followed by Spencer Schutt (96) and Bryan Sommers (101).

The Norwalk girls were paced by Hayley Zagor's 100. She was followed by Katie Wolcott (110), Analiese King (117), Kilee Duncan (120) and Kennedy Leto (128).

Edison was was 11th with a combined score of 380.

Korrigan Sanders paced the Charger boys with a 93. He was followed by Parker Campbell (104), Hayden Lewis (105), Aaron Febbo (118) and Tyler Pounds (153).

Meredith Unger led the Edison girls with a 95 and Mallory Meister had a 98. Madison Butler (100), Anna Smith (119) and Elena McCord (124) rounded out the lineup.

TENNIS

Norwalk 4, Willard 1

WILLARD — The Truckers improved to 4-0 on the season with Monday's non-league win over the host Crimson Flashes at the Dean Ave. Athletic Complex.

Megan Miller defeated Naomi Schag at first singles with identical scores of 6-2. At second singles, Sidney Sage beat Macey Robinson at second singles (6-1, 6-3).

Willard's lone win came at third singles as Belle Van Zoest outlasted Ana Osborn in three sets (6-1, 6-7 (3), 10-3).

Norwalk's first doubles tandem of Maya Phillips and Kendall Hammersmith defeated Maelyn Shaarda and Moriah Slone (6-1, 6-4). At second doubles, Kenzie Smith and Lauren Brown beat Rebecca Honaker and Emily Danhoff (6-4, 6-1).

In junior varsity action for Norwalk, Shyla Gruhlke and Madelyn Long (6-3) won for the Truckers. Falling in doubles action was Mary Willis and Mia Chicotel (6-4), Roxy Brummitt and and Evelyn Harris (6-2), Grace Sorenson and Lilly McDuffie (6-5), Vanessa Vazquez and Alex Scott (6-0) and Sarah Hart and Zoey Cooper (6-1).

Norwalk is at Tiffin Columbian and Sandusky on Wednesday and Thursday to open SBC Lake Division play.

Willard (1-4) hosts Huron on Tuesday and visits Sandusky on Wednesday.

Edison 5, Toledo Bowsher 0

MILAN — The Chargers picked up their first dual win of the season with Monday's non-league win over Toledo Bowsher.

At first singles, Alli Vogus defeated Karmaliia Rogers (6-1, 6-0) and Brynleigh Dail swept Jill Fogle at second singles (6-0, 6-0). Third singles saw Lizzie Campbell beat Jamyra Stevens (6-1, 6-1).

At first singles, Ivy Kluding and Kiera Keoghan teamed up to defeat Sarah Brandison and Leilanie Allen (6-1, 6-3). Sarah Gates and Delaney Lococo had a walkover win at second doubles for the Chargers (1-3).
