Northwestern girls dominate on track to win 1B crown, Roncalli claims boys team title

It was tight throughout at the Region 1B track and field meet Thursday in Britton, but Aberdeen Roncalli ultimately ended up claiming the boys title, while Northwestern won the girls division.

Depth was key for the Cavalier boys.

Roncalli took the top three pole vault places, with Mason Carrels winning with a height of 12 feet, 3 inches. Teammate Beau Price took second, clearing 10 feet, while Isaac Price cleared 9 feet. Warner's Chays Mansfield also had a 9-foot vault.

Carrels was the lone Roncalli boy to win an individual event in the team victory.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Roncalli's Aiden Fisher turned in a personal best of 18.29, but that was behind Warner's Hunter Cramer, who finished in 16.81 seconds. Cramer also won the 300-meter hurdles with a personal best of 44.15 seconds.

Logan Permann of Warner won both the 100- and 200-meter dashes, edging out Aberdeen Christian's Ben Rohl in both races.

Peyton Jung was another contributor for the Monarchs, winning the 400-meter dash in 52.98 seconds, beating Northwestern's Ethan Boekelheide, who finished in 56.55.

Warner athletes won eight events in the boys division as the Monarchs took second in the team race. Northwestern was third.

In the field events, Aberdeen Christian's Abe Kretchman took home both the long jump (19-02) and the triple jump (40-05.75) titles. Colton Spitzer of Leola finished first in the shot put (44-02), while his teammate Dustin Wurtz won discus (137-04).

Jessica Boekelheide sweeps girls sprints

For the Northwestern girls, Jessica Boekelheide won three individual events to lead the Wildcats to the team title. She swept the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes.

Northwestern's Tara Blachford won the 800-meter dash, and teammate Ella Boekelheide won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.

In the 1,600, the Ella Boekelheide entered the meet with the fastest time in Class B, but re-set that mark at 5:23.07, trimming more than a half-second from her time.

Lauren Marcuson of Warner won the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best of 18.73 seconds, while teammate Ava Nilsson won the 300-meter hurdles in 52.81 seconds.

Northwestern would also claim the 800-meter relay, with a team comprised of Payton Grandpre, Josie Sparling, Ella Haven and Ashley Haven. The Wildcats also won the 1,600-meter relay with a team made up of Ella Haven, Ashley Haven, Grandpre and Jessica Boekelheide.

Aberdeen Christian won the 400-meter relay with a team of Joy Rohrbach, Shawnteah La Croix, Payton Skarin and Ali Isakson. Roncalli won the 3,200-meter relay with a team of Sara Schmidt, Bella Martinez, Madisen Martin and Paige Schmidt.

Tri-State's Morgan Navratil (31-07.5) won the triple jump, while Warner's Kyra Marcuson (14-09.25) won the long jump with a personal-best effort. Tri-State's Kadee Davidson won the discus (93-09), while Roncalli's Sophia Madsen won the shot put (31-08.50).

The Warner girls dominated the pole vault, highlighted by Jordyn Jensen, who cleared 9-01 feet. Teammates Jersey Deibert and Cassidy Hardie both cleared 7-09, as did Roncalli's Lillian Jensen.

Warner took second in the team race, followed by the Cavaliers.

The Class B state track and field meet is May 26-28 at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.
