Northern Indiana Conference girls track: Here's who won MVP and coach of the year

Angel Thomas had a list of goals for her junior track season at South Bend Adams. One of them was to win Northern Indiana Conference MVP. After this week, she can check that one off the list.

All season, Thomas has shown she was one of the best sprinters in the South Bend area. The NIC rewarded her efforts with first-team honors in the 100-meter dash (12.35) and 200-meter dash (26.11). She also won first-team honors in the long jump (16-9) and part of South Bend Adams' 4x100-meter relay team (Isabella Soens, Sofia Frazee, Kayla Douglas, 50.70).

The Eagles had one of the strongest seasons in the NIC, finishing second in the conference behind Penn (180.5 to 113 points) and also re-claiming its city title at the South Bend City meet, led by Savino Rivera, who was named NIC Coach Of The Year.

Adams had numerous other honorees, including Douglas, who was first-team in 100-meter hurdles (15.98) and Leia McCann who won first-team discus honors (110-9.50).

Around the league, Penn had a strong showing on the first-team list. The Kingsmen won the 4x800-meter relay honor (Aubrey Morgan, Abby Stevens, Julie Smith, Julia Economou, 9:55.66). Smith also won first-team in the 1,600-meter run (5:06.59), while Economou won the 400-meter run (59.68) and 800 (2:25.24). Both Smith and Economou were also on Penn's first-team 4x400-meter relay team (Reese Armour, Ella Bailey, 4:16.24).

South Bend Saint Joseph's Ella Frick won first-team 300-meter hurdles (47.82), while New Prairie's Lillian Zelasko won first-team 3,200-meter run (11:26.53) and Ilayna Baltes won pole vault (9-6). Elkhart's Madison Axsom won first-team high jump (5-3).
