North Davidson High School girls' and boys' swim teams placed first and second, respectively, in the Davidson County Championships on Jan. 13, 2022.

North Davidson's girls' and boys' swim teams took first and second place, respectively, at last week's Davidson County Championships, hosted by Oak Grove.

The Black Knights girls' team won with a score of 279 to lead a top five of Ledford (212), Lexington (193), West Davidson (168) and East Davidson (131) in the eight-team event.

Oak Grove won the boys' meet with a score of 270. North Davidson (257), Ledord (214), East Davidson (115) and Central Davidson (85) rounded out the boys' top five.

North Davidson's consistency put the Knights at the top of the girls' leaderboard with second-place finishes in the 200 medley relay (Claire Hartsell, Baylei Burges, Peyton Yarbrough, Lindsay Yarbrough), 200 free (Emily Davies), 50 free (L. Yarbrough), 100 butterfly (C. Hartsell), 200 free relay (C. Hartsell, Burgess, P. Yarbrough, L. Yarbrough), 100 backstroke (C. Hartsell) and 100 breaststroke (Burgess). Peyton Yarbrough also notched third-place finishes in the 50 free and 100 butterfly.

The Knights' team of Rachel Hartsell, Hadley Smith, Mattie Berrier and Davies won the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:52.85.

"This is a special team," coach Jennifer Brinkley said. "They really balance each other out well. They want to work together. It's not an individual think for them. They're very consistent and it's a great group all-around."

North Davidson's boys' team of Cooper Berrier, Grayson Byrd, Lane Cook and Rhett Norman won the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:01.00.

Cooke also won the 100 butterfly (1:03.07) and he finished third in the 100 backstroke.

"It was a heartbreaker when they lost," said Brinkley, who also coaches the boys' team. "They only lost by 11 and that's not a lot at a swim meet."

She said strong freshman and senior classes are balanced by solid core group of sophomores and juniors on the boys' squad.

Oak Grove's Jay Sams, Abraham Williard, Drew Hey and Joshua Vogl won the 200 free relay at 1:44.17 and the 400 free relay at 4:04.33. Vogl (1:13.56) and Hey (1:16.04) swept the top two in the 100 breastroke.

The Mid Piedmont Conference Championship meet is scheduled for Wednesday at Kernersville YMCA.
