Nonprofit looking to collect 5,000 donated shoes from Galesburg area

GALESBURG — Soles4souls, a nonprofit from Nashville, Tennessee, will be holding a shoe drive with the aim of collecting 5,000 “gently used” shoes from Galesburg residents.

Penny Wagher wrote in a news release that people can drop off shoes through Dec. 31 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish at 2401 N. Broad St., First Presbyterian Church at 101 N Prairie St., Faith Methodist Church at 876 E. Knox St., and her front porch at 488 Jefferson St.

The shoes will be sent to the Soles4souls headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee, and then sorted and distributed to people around the world who don’t have financial resources.

Through distributing shoes, the nonprofit aims to help people whose primary means of transportation is walking, help create small business opportunities for individuals in poor countries and keep textile materials out of landfills.

“So please go through your closets, kids and adults, and collect the shoes that aren’t being worn and bring them to a distribution location,” Wagher wrote. “Then tell your friends and family and ask them to also help. If possible tie or buckle them together. One pair of shoes does make a difference!”
