Community Health Action Network will host a Juneteenth celebration this weekend, which includes a free backpack giveaway and prizes.

Scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, the event is scheduled at Trinity Lutheran Church, 16138 Molino Drive in Victorville.

The event will include entertainment, vendors, raffles, prizes, and a COVID-19 vaccination clinic. Backpacks are free to the first 300 children who register online at chanhd.com.

In addition, four participating families will receive $250 toward a grocery shopping spree.

The Juneteenth event commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and seeks to connect the community with local services to promote health equity among all residents, organizers said

The newly recognized federal holiday will be observed on Monday and was instituted after Senate Bill 475 was signed into law.

CHAN is a nonprofit founded in 2007, which provides a variety of programs related to health, education and finance to residents of the Victor Valley.

With a model based on client participation, CHAN is focused on assisting clients to invest in themselves and positively change their circumstances.

Rather than establishing another “giveaway program,” the CHAN model is based on rewarding clients for becoming actively involved in its programs and events.
