NOAA Satellite Captures Images of Powerful Solar Flare

Satellite imagery captured the moment the sun hurled a powerful solar flare in Earth’s direction, on February 17, according to NASA.

This footage, taken by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) GOES East satellite shows the powerful burst of energy erupting from the sun’s surface.

According to NASA this flare was classified as an X2.2 flare. “X-class denotes the most intense flares, while the number provides more information about its strength.”

“Flares and solar eruptions can impact radio communications, electric power grids, navigation signals, and pose risks to spacecraft and astronauts,” NASA said. Credit: NOAA Satellite and Information Service via Storyful
