Game notes: Michigan State basketball begins the Big Ten portion of its schedule on the road in iconic Williams Arena on Wednesday night. The 7-2 Spartans are getting some national recognition in addition to their top-20 ranking. MSU ranks 19th in the first NET rankings by the NCAA and first in strength of schedule, things that could come into play in a few months, as long as the Spartans continue to succeed.

Their opponents, the Minnesota Golden Gophers, enter their conference opener undefeated. After a relatively soft portion of the non-conference schedule, the Gophers strung together back-to-back road wins over Pitt and Mississippi State. With a victory, the Gophers will remain undefeated, but also win their first conference opener since they beat Rutgers to begin the 2017-18 Big Ten schedule.
