No. 12 Michigan State downs No. 6 Michigan in front of sold out Munn Ice Arena

Adam Nightingale is officially the first coach in Michigan State history to win his first game in the storied rivalry against the University of Michigan.

The Spartans, in front of a sold out crowd at Munn Ice Arena, knocked off the rival Wolverines 2-1 on Friday night.

Michigan opened the scoring in the first period when freshman TJ Hughes buried one, taking advantage of a Spartan turnover, giving Michigan a 1-0 lead with 6:31 remaining in the first period.

That lead wouldn’t last long, just under four minutes later Cole Krygier opened the scoring for Michigan State scoring a shorthanded goal with 2:56 remaining in the first frame.

The game winning goal came at the 12:14 of the second period when a mad scramble in front of the net resulted in a poke in goal from Tiernan Shoudy.

The Spartans were able to hold it down the rest of the way behind a strong showing from netminder Dylan St. Cyr.

Michigan State and Michigan will square off in Ann Arbor tomorrow night at 6:30 EST on Big Ten Network.
