Nights of 'Nunsense' ahead at Pike Road Theatre Company

The cast of "Nunsense" has been rehearsing since mid-August for the Pike Road Theatre Company production, which runs through Oct. 9.

"Nunsense" is the second-longest running off-Broadway production and its popularity has led to two films and six sequels. Creator Dan Goggin named the characters in honor of nuns from his school days and for whom he maintains an affection. Since its debut, "Nunsense" has delighted audiences with more than 5,000 productions worldwide and has been translated into 21 languages.

“There are five very talented women in the cast of 'Nunsense,'” theatre founder and president James Keith Posey said. “And we have six volunteers working behind the scenes making the magic happen.”

He added that the cast prepares about six weeks to put the show together. “It roughly comes to about 80 hours of rehearsal time to pull off a show like 'Nunsense'. Of course, this doesn’t include all the extra hours each cast member does at home,” Posey said.

Tickets are $20 with group rates available. Tickets can be purchased at Pike Road Theatre Co. (pikeroadtheatrecompany.org).

"Nunsense" is the fourth production of the inaugural season of the Theatre at the Pike Road Intermediate School.

The comedy can be enjoyed at 12 performances taking place during three weekends. Posey said a musical comedy can be harder to produce than a dramatic piece of theatre.

“Timing is everything in a musical comedy and depending on the reaction of a particular audience the show will live or die by the laughter or lack thereof,” Posey said. “I love producing dramatic pieces of theatre, but sometimes it is nice to go and just laugh. I can assure you Nunsense is bringing the laughs. This show has us rolling in rehearsals and is sure to leave our audiences walking out of the theatre with sore ribs. This is my first time to direct Dan Goggin’s "Nunsense," but it is fast becoming one of my favorite shows of all time.”

"Nunsense" stars Jan Roeton as Sister Mary Regina the Reverend Mother, Tara Fenn as Sister Mary Hubert, Michon Givens as Sister Robert Anne, Savannah Bowden as Sister Mary Amnesia, and Tiffany Presley as Sister Mary Leo.

The Little Sisters of Hoboken are ready to sing and dance their way into the hearts of audiences. Join Reverend Mother and four Sisters of the order in this hilarious spoof, as they put on a variety show that is sure to be ‘habit-forming.’

Due to an unfortunate food poisoning incident, the Sisters find that they must hold a fundraiser to try and raise money to pay the burial costs of some of the dead nuns. A serious problem for sure, and a great reason why this show will have you absolutely roaring with laughter.

Posey said the theater has grown, involving people from all over the River Region in productions.

“I am excited to welcome talented actors from all over our area,” he said. “One of the things I love about PRTC is that we continue to have very talented actors with little experience getting the opportunities to work alongside veteran actors that have been doing this for a long time. I believe there can be growth on both sides of that equation.”

He said more volunteers are welcomed to take part in the theater, which included a summer production featuring youth from Theatre summer camps.

“I keep encouraging people to just get involved so you can see the impact the performing arts is having in our community. Financially, I would love to see more community leaders and companies step up to support the Theatre as we grow and strategically plan for the future,” Posey said. “This past summer was incredible as we kicked off our first Youth Production Camp of ‘The Little Mermaid,’ alongside our mainstage production of ‘The Mousetrap.’ Two beautiful productions with new directors that solidified to the community, ‘this is the place to be!’”

Posey said 46 kids participated in the Summer Youth Production Camp which created a wonderful experience for the young actors. “The show development, team building, and leadership growth will be felt for years to come with all of these incredible young people in Pike Road,” Posey said.

Posey said the Theatre has plans to expand its activities with the announcement of college scholarships and an exciting 2023 Season.

The Theatre offers free parking and is handicapped accessible. For more information on the Theatre, visit www.pikeroadtheatrecompany.org.
