Night protests rage after Minnesota police killing
A Minneapolis suburb was gripped byunrest for a second night on Monday after the fatal police shooting of a 20-year-old Black man, Daunte Wright, over the weekend.
Hundreds of protesters braved a steady downpour and defied a curfew order, when they clashed with police in riot gear.
Darkness fell around police headquarters in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota.
A crowd surged against a makeshift fence erected to keep protesters at bay, some hurling bottles and other projectiles as police responded with tear gas and what appeared to be plastic rounds.
Many demonstrators arrived from an outdoor vigil for Wright's family, friends and supporters.
Police had pulled him over for an expired vehicle registration, before finding a warrant out for his arrest.
The city police chief said initial reports showed the police officer mistakenly shot Wright with her gun instead of a taser.
Wright’s mother, Katie Wright, shed doubt on that justification.
“He was my life, he was my son, and I can never get that back, because of a mistake? Because of an accident?”
During Monday’s memorial at the spot where Wright was killed, relatives remembered him as a good-natured father who worked multiple jobs to support his 2-year-old son.
The veteran officer who shot Wright, Kim Potter, was placed on administrative leave.
