Nickels for Know-How vote set for November

Sep. 27—HENDERSON — The Vance County Cooperative Extension Office is preparing for the periodic vote to determine if users and producers of feed or fertilizer are willing to continue the self-assessment program known as the Nickels for Know-How Referendum.

If the referendum is approved, growers will be assessed 15 cents per hundred pounds on the feed and fertilizer they produce. A two-thirds favorable vote is required to approve the assessment.

Proceeds from the assessment are used to support agricultural research and education.

The assessment will be held on Thursday, Nov. 17. Vance County Extension Director Turner Pride said voting will take place at the County Extension Office, 305 Young St. in Henderson.

The Nickels for Know-How program has been in place since 1948. The law requires a new referendum to be held every six years. The program raises about $1.4 million annually.

The funds are collected by the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and allocated by the N.C. Carolina Agricultural Foundation's board of directors.

The money supports agricultural research and extension projects at N.C. State University, and provided operating support for N.C. State Extension, the N.C. Agricultural Research Service and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences academic programs.

The foundation is a nonprofit corporation with the mission of "aiding and promoting educational and charitable purposes of N.C. State," as stated on its website.
