Neymar returned for Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday. Fans weren’t happy about it.
Perhaps they felt different afterward?
Neymar uncorked a bicycle-esque one-time finish in the second minute of stoppage time as PSG escaped Strasbourg 1-0 at Parc des Princes.
Supporters in the French capital jeered and insulted the Brazilian superstar, and AFP reports they even unfurled a banner telling Neymar’s father, who is also his agent, to sell his son in a district of Rio de Janeiro notorious for prostitution.
Neymar made no secret of his desire this summer to leave PSG, where injuries and underperformance have resulted in a frustrating two years since his world record signing from Barcelona. He didn’t get his wish, which means both sides are likely stuck in this awkward marriage for another season, at least.
Or maybe there’s a change of heart. That kind of thing tends to happen when you remember Neymar is still one of the top players on the planet, capable of absurdity like this (via beIN Sports):
Abdou Diallo, the center back who had the assist on that cross, was signed this summer and is only just 23. PSG also signed three-time Champions League-winning goalkeeper Keylor Navas from Real Madrid and talented attacker Mauro Icardi from Inter Milan, who both made their debuts Saturday, as part of some sound summer transfer business.
They just didn’t sell Neymar, which was the story everyone was following. Perhaps these reinforcements will contribute to a fresh lease on life for Neymar, and PSG can scale the European heights it so yearns to hit.
Or maybe the damage is irreparable. If Saturday’s result reminded of us anything, there’s always hope.
