Neymar rape case dropped due to lack of evidence
Sao Paulo police have dropped the case investigating rape allegations against Neymar due to a lack of evidence, reports suggest.
A spokesperson for the Attorney General’s office said the police decision will now be sent to prosecutors who will have 15 days to evaluate the case before making a final decision.
That final decision on the case is set to be made by a judge.
Allegations surfaced in May that the Brazil and PSG star had attacked Brazilian model Najila Trindade in a Paris hotel.
Police documents said the two became acquainted via social media and Neymer had flown her out to see him in France.
The document alleges that Neymar became ‘aggressive’ and ‘engaged in sexual intercourse against the will of the victim’.
Neymar vehemently denied the accusations and released a seven-minute video on Twitter claiming he was being extorted.
In the video, Neymar admitted that the two did have sex but that it was entirely consensual.
“What happened that day was a relationship between a man and a woman, within four walls, like with any couple,” he revealed. “And the next day nothing much happened. We kept exchanging messages.”
The video also included extracts of WhatsApp conversations between the two which put the former Barcelona man at risk of breaking privacy laws after showing intimate pictures of his accuser without her consent.
Trindade also went public, conducting a TV interview and releasing a video in which the two appeared to be arguing.
However, the model was dropped by a number of lawyers who felt she was unable to provide enough concrete evidence to support her accusation.
Police also filed a defamation suit against Ms Trindade after she implied they were ‘corrupt’ in their handling of the case.
In a recent interview with UOL Esporte, Trindade continued to criticise the process and insisted she was being unfairly treated.
"I feel like they've taken advantage of my desperation, my trauma and my disorientation," she said. "What worries me even more is how they're treating this case in Brazil - in an ignorant and inhumane manner.”
"I've not received support at any moment purely because it's about Neymar.”
