Newton hoops split with rival Grinnell

Dec. 5—GRINNELL — Brody Bauer's 3-pointer with 15 seconds left in overtime sent Newton's boys basketball team to a 59-57 road win over Grinnell on Friday night.

The Cardinals won their Little Hawkeye Conference opener despite shooting 37.7 percent from the floor.

Newton led 13-9 after one but trailed 25-23 at halftime. Newton tied the game after three and it remained tied after four following a 16-all fourth quarter.

Adam Mattes led the Cardinals with 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists and Bauer finished with 16 points and four rebounds.

Jake Ingle added nine points, two rebounds, three assists and two steals, Kael Swarts chipped in six points, three rebounds and two assists and Cole Plowman had five points and six boards.

Tade Vanderlaan scored six points, Caleb Mattes registered four rebounds and two assists and Kacey Sommars grabbed four boards.

The Cardinals (2-0 overall, 1-0 in the LHC) were 7-of-23 from 3-point range and made 12-of-21 from the free-throw line.

Dylan Mcllrath scored 22 points and Grinnell (1-1, 0-1) and the Tigers were 16-of-24 from the foul line.

GIRLS

Grinnell 79, Newton 20

Class 4A No. 10 Grinnell hit 10 3-pointers and was plus-10 in rebounding during a 79-20 home win over Newton on Friday.

The Cardinals shot just 23.5 percent from the floor, were 2-of-11 from 3-point range and shot just two free throws. They turned it over 36 times.

"We were intimidated by them," Newton girls basketball coach Eric Vander Velden said. "We rushed and were sloppy on offense and didn't execute on defense."

Grinnell led 24-4 after one and went up 48-9 at halftime. The Tigers outscored the Cardinals 30-12 in the second half.

Sophia Reynolds registered four points, four rebounds and two assists to lead Newton, while Rori Nehring chipped in five points and two boards. Kealey Manning tallied four points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Audrey Rausch finished with three points and three rebounds and Emma Rogers and Jaz Cooper each grabbed three boards.

Haidyn Hall led the Tigers with 23 points and five boards. The Tigers out-rebounded Newton 37-27.

"We turned it over too much and the good looks we had didn't fall," Vander Velden, who played 17 kids and dressed five freshmen in the game.
