Newton girls tennis downs Marshalltown

Apr. 11—Chassidy Henwood and Katie McConnell were dominant for Newton's girls tennis team on Friday.

The rest of the Cardinals were pretty solid, too.

Newton didn't sweep Marshalltown but handed the Bobcats an 8-3 loss at Aurora Heights Park. The Cardinals were 4-2 in singles and 4-1 in doubles on the day.

Henwood and McConnell both won their No. 2 and No. 4 singles matches 6-1, 6-0 against Regan Smith and Briana Hargrave. They also won their No. 2 doubles match by that same score against Hargrave and Rebekah Downs.

In all, six of the eight wins for the Cardinals were in straight sets. Jerica Dafflitto defeated Katelyn Tiernan 6-0, 7-5 at No. 5 singles and Lauryn Garrett downed Emily Diggins 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6.

The other straight-set win for Newton came at No. 3 singles where Megan Lovan and Dafflitto swept Tiernan and Chesi Uhde 7-6 (5), 6-4.

The other two wins in doubles play came from Garrett and Alyssa Shannon at No. 4 and Molly Lovan and Ella Swarts at No. 5.

Garrett and Shannon downed Diggins and Grace Bethel 3-6, 6-4, 10-4 and Molly Lovan and Swarts took care of Clair Bohan and Taylor Jones 7-6 (3), 4-6, 10-7.

Newton's No. 1 singles player, Maggie Garrett, ran into a talented player at the top of the Bobcat lineup. Cass Lecompte down Maggie Garrett 6-0, 6-0. Lecompte then teamed up with Smith to defeat Maggie Garrett and Kya Butler 6-4, 6-3.

Downs also defeated Megan Lovan 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles for Marshalltown's other win.
