Newburgh shooting: Police say man fatally shot, 5-year-old boy wounded

NEWBURGH − A 29-year-old man died from multiple bullet wounds and a 5-year-old riding his bicycle was shot near Washington Street in the Orange County city, police said Friday morning.

Newburgh police continued interviewing people and going over available evidence as they searched for the shooter or shooters. Police released scant details of the shooting at 7:07 p.m. Thursday near Washington and Clark streets.

The identities of the man and child were not released as of Friday morning, police said.

The 5-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to one leg, while the man died from multiple bullet wounds to his body, police said in a news release. Both were driven by police to St. Luke’s hospital.

The man was pronounced dead at the hospital and the boy was airlifted with non-life-threatening injuries to the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, police said.

Children were playing in the area of 100 block of Washington near Clark Street when the gunshots rang out. Police found a gun and shell casings at the scene.

Police said Newburgh Police Commissioner Jose Gomerez visited with the child and his mother at St. Luke’s.

“It is disheartening to see this child’s innocent face lying in a hospital bed, crying in pain,” he said. “As a community, we need to take a stand against gun violence and demand we put a stop to the trauma that continues to be inflicted on our children, our youth and our city.”
