We can all use a boost of energy throughout the day, especially if you’re very busy with a full-time job, taking care of kids, or studying for a diploma (or maybe all three).

While most people normally get a mid-day boost with a cup of coffee or an energy drink, this sugar-free and aspartame-free energy gum from NeuroGum is an alternative that’s fast-acting without the sugar crash or jitters that come from traditional caffeine.

So, what exactly is “energy gum?”

NeuroGum Nootropic Energy Gum — which is Amazon’s “Deal of the Day” and is on sale for $16 for a six-pack (nine pieces per pack, 54 in total), or 25 percent off its $21 list price — comes in a “Enlighten” mint flavor and uses a combination of caffeine from green tea, vitamin B12 for energy and vitamin B6 for mood stimulation, and L-theanine for focus on a sluggish day.

I must admit that I was a bit skeptical when I came across this product. However, this gum’s 4.4 out of five star customer rating from more than 800 reviews made me reconsider — especially after reading so many positive testimonials.

One former doubter wrote, “At first I was skeptical about this product because energy drinks and coffee do not really give me that great of an energy boost at all. My first time using this product I took one gum and I felt it within 15 minutes. My senses were heightened and I felt more mentally alert.”

Another reviewer raved about its quicker release compared to traditional caffeine: “I normally drink a cup of coffee before I work out in the morning, but found NeuroGum to be a quicker and cheaper alternative. It tastes pretty good and the caffeine kicks in super fast. I'll definitely be stocking up on this gum from here on out to get me going in the morning.”

How does it work?

Instead of using ingredients like sugar and high doses of caffeine, NeuroGum uses energy extracted from green tea through a process called cold compression that maximizes the gum’s active ingredients, including low-dose caffeine, vitamins B12 and B6, and L-theanine.

These active ingredients have the ability to heighten focus and mood, and due to the relatively mild dosage, you won’t experience the crash and jitters that typically come along with coffee and energy drinks.

“As a medical student this has been an amazing addition to my daily study regimen,” wrote a NeuroGum reviewer. “Same amazing boost as the Diet Coke and coffee I used to chug, but without the jitters, crash/headache, or teeth staining. It's become my new go-to for staying awake and alert in the O.R. or on the wards. Highly recommend for anyone who needs a pick-me-up but doesn't want that ‘wired’ sensation you get from coffee.”

The Bottom Line

Amazon reviewers are overwhelmingly positive on the minty taste and feel-good effects NeuroGum’s Nootropic Energy Gum offers.

One delighted buyer wrote, “Within about a few minutes I’d get a pleasant boost in both mood and energy, with a focused sense of relaxation that I found very useful for times that I both needed a pick-me-up and something to take the edge off — for example getting through the end of a workday. I also liked using it after lunch as a healthier alternative to a cup of coffee to help stave off that dreaded post food drowsiness and help with digestion.”

Another added, “I love this gum and I really do feel more energized and focused! Seriously freshens my breath too!”
