Nelson, Haut, Shekeryk, Opperud earn Optimist honors

Apr. 16—Haley Nelson, Gavin Haut, Luke Shekeryk and Autumn Opperud were selected Jamestown Optimist Club Athletes of the Week for the week of April 5-11.

Nelson, a junior on the JHS girls soccer team, tallied a goal and two assists in the Blue Jays' 6-1 win over Bismarck St. Mary's to open the season.

Haut, a senior on the JHS boys track and field team, qualified for the state Class A 3,200-meter run by covering the distance in 9 minutes, 59.90 seconds at the Valley City Invitational on April 8.

Shekeryk, a junior designated hitter on the UJ baseball team from Seattle, Washington, slashed .556/.636/1.444 with five home runs and a double to help the Jimmies to a 5-0 record. Shekeryk went 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs in a 12-6 victory over Dakota Wesleyan, South Dakota.

Opperud, a junior on the UJ women's soccer team from Huntington Beach, California, scored goals in all three of UJ's playoff matches in the Jimmies' march to the championship match of the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament.
