Neighbors say illegal dumping in Atlanta neighborhood is out of hand; they want it to stop

Residents in one Atlanta neighborhood are dealing with a mess: illegal dumping that spills into the street.

Channel 2′s Tom Jones spoke to one neighbor in southeast Atlanta who said the problem left her depressed.

“It depresses me. It gives me chills,” Shante Megett said.

She is one of several neighbors who live in the Thomasville community who are sickened by the constant illegal dumping.

“I’ve called the city numerous times for them to clean it up,” Megett told Channel 2 Action News.

Some neighbors believe workers who are clearing out a nearby apartment complex are the ones dumping.

They told Channel 2 they saw a truck leaving the complex with old furniture.

Channel 2′s Tom Jones spoke to Jason Winston, the councilman for this area, and he doesn’t believe the illegal dumping is coming from the complex.

But if it is, Winston said the city will work with code enforcement to come up with a solution.

“We’re working with code enforcement,” Winston said. “That’s something that I’ll take seriously. I’ll go over, and we’ll talk to some of our partners to see if that’s something that’s happening.”

Winston believes developers who are flipping houses are doing the illegal dumping.

“It’s been a systemic problem in the community with people who don’t necessarily live in the community,” he said.

And as for the neighbors, they really don’t care who’s doing the dumping. They just want it to stop.

“I think the neighborhood as a whole is being taken advantage of,” Megett said.
