Nearly 1,700 flights canceled out of DFW Airport and Dallas Love Field on Wednesday
Flight delays and cancellations are mounting Wednesday as the winter storm persists into a third day with sleet, freezing rain and snow.
Nearly 1,700 flights at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field have been canceled so far Wednesday as of midday, according to FlightAware. That’s roughly 1 in 4 flights scrapped.
About half of flights at Austin’s main airport are also canceled Wednesday.
More than 800 of Fort Worth-based American Airlines’ scheduled flights have been canceled, about a quarter of its total operations as the winter storm grips much of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and into Tennessee. Dallas-based Southwest Airlines is seeing nearly 700 cancellations, or about 17%.
DFW said it continues to mitigate the impacts of the winter weather and treat all surfaces to ensure safety.
The airport reminds travelers to check their flight status with the airline before leaving for the airport, consider road conditions and allow extra travel time. DFW said TSA security operations are limited Wednesday.
Love Field said it continues to keep its airport open and functional while monitoring changes in weather, staffing and supply constraints that could potentially affect operations.
“During any extreme winter weather events, DAL’s operations are responsible for pretreating and clearing the runways, taxiways, Herb Kelleher Way and pedestrian walkways,” a spokesperson for Love Field said. “Surface treatments began prior to the storm’s arrival and have continued daily. Our team also monitors surface temperatures and conducts friction tests on the runways. During these fluid events, the airport’s leadership staff frequently meets to discuss updates and reassign resources as needed and applicable staff remains on-site around the clock throughout the events to oversee these tasks.”
Love Field said it has not observed a high volume of passengers in the terminal, which likely indicates most passengers are receiving timely information with updated statuses and decreasing unnecessary roadway travel.
