North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein had a minor stroke on Monday night, he reported on Tuesday on Twitter.

“Last night I had stroke-like symptoms after Anna and I walked our dog Jenny, so I went to the hospital. Doctors confirmed that I had a minor stroke and performed a successful procedure to remove a small blood clot,” Stein said.

Stein is still in the hospital recovering, he said. Anna is Stein’s wife.

“I’m feeling back to normal now and am beyond blessed to have no lingering effects,” he said. “My doctor wants me to stay here for another day or two to get some rest before I get back to work. Anna is my hero for recognizing that something was wrong and insisting that I go to the hospital.”

Stein, 55, recently had COVID-19, though he said he did not have symptoms. Stein, a Democrat, is in his second term as attorney general and expected to run for governor.

Get-well wishes immediately began pouring in, including from Democratic U.S. Senate candidate and former state Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley, who told Stein she was “relieved to hear you are doing well — keeping you in my prayers during your recovery.”

Republican House Speaker Tim Moore said he was “praying for a full and speedy recovery.”

Stein is the president-elect of the National Association of Attorneys General, which was having its consumer protection spring conference in Raleigh this week, starting Tuesday.

A leader in another state, Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, also had a stroke recently.

Stein said that he wanted to “thank the EMTs for transporting me and the medical staff for their care. I have a tremendous amount to be thankful for this morning, especially my loving family. Just thinking of them makes my heart swell.”

Stein said he’s grateful his wife knew the signs of a stroke.

Signs of a stroke

Stein tweeted out the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website listing signs of a stroke: cdc.gov/stroke/signs_symptoms.htm.

According to the CDC, signs for men and women are:

Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body.

Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or difficulty understanding speech.

Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.

Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination.

Sudden severe headache with no known cause.

The CDC said that every minute counts to prevent damage from a stroke, and to call 9-1-1 immediately if you or anyone has those symptoms.
