House Speaker Nancy Pelosi joined members of Congress on the evening of December 1 to light the Capitol Christmas tree.

Footage by Joy Lee shows Pelosi turn on the lights with Michael Mavris, a fifth grader from Mary Peacock Elementary School in Crescent City, California, who was chosen to officially light the tree.

Mavris wrote an essay about “the ‘indomitable spirit’ of the land and its indigenous people”, that was selected from a nationwide competition to be the “tree-lighter”.
