Murfreesboro area high school football Week 7 roundup: Riverdale, Stewarts Creek stay alive with region wins

After being held scoreless for the first three quarters, Riverdale scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth to knock off Siegel 21-7 Thursday night in a battle of teams trying to stay alive for the playoffs.

The Warriors (4-3, 1-2 Region 4-6A) tied the game early in the fourth on D.J. Taylor's 15-yard run. On Siegel's next possession, Riverdale's Jaylen Thompson intercepted a Thomas Santel pass and returned it 33 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.

Riverdale put the game away on Isaiah Verser's 52-yard TD run. Verser finished with 22 carries for 179 yards.

Siegel (4-3, 0-3) took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on Santel's touchdown run.

Both teams will have an open date next week but will get back into region play on Oct. 14 as Riverdale plays host to Oakland and Siegel will play host to Stewarts Creek.

Stewarts Creek 42, Rockvale 7 (Thursday)

Javarian Otey scored three touchdowns — two rushing and one receiving — to lead the Red Hawks (3-4, 1-2 Region 4-6A) to their first league win and keep their Class 6A playoff hopes firm.

Otey had 17 carries for 189 yards and rattled off an 81-yard TD run and 20-yard TD run. He also caught a 21-yard touchdown pass. Teammate Tayden Mounivong had eight carries for 81 yards with a 40-yard TD run and Caleb Floyd added 86 yards on 16 carries with a 34-yard TD run.

Tavon Lawrence picked off two Malachi Telin passes. Telin was making his first varsity start for Rockvale (4-3, 2-1) after replacing injured starter Brennan Mayhew, who suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 6.

Oakland 53, Blackman 18

Five different players scored touchdowns for top-ranked Oakland and the Patriots were never forced to punt in a 53-18 win over host Blackman in a key Region 4-6A showdown Friday night.

The Patriots (6-0, 3-0 region) built a 21-6 lead early in the second quarter and the Blaze (5-2, 2-1) never threatened from there.

The Patriots racked up 479 total yards. Kade Hewitt ran for two TDs and passed for another, while T.T. Hill had 70 yards rushing and a touchdown and added a TD reception.

Oakland senior Eric Taylor, playing in his first game after missing the first five with a shoulder injury, scored on a 41-yard run on the Patriots' first possession. He finished with 81 yards and added seven tackles on defense.

Mason Bell rushed eight times for 97 yards and a touchdown for Oakland.

Jack Risner threw for 141 yards and two TDs for Blackman but left the game in the second half (undisclosed injury) and senior wide receiver Jacob Page also exited with a thumb injury, something that hampered him in the off-season.

Oakland plays at CPA Thursday while Blackman will have an open date.

Cane Ridge 35, Smyrna 14

In a battle for first in Region 6-6A, the Ravens (6-1, 4-0 region) jumped out to a 21-0 lead and never looked back.

Cane Ridge quarterback Shivan Abdullah was 9-of-14 for 186 yards and two TDs and rushed for 82 yards and another TD . Reggie Goodloe had 144 yards rushing and two TDs.

Arion Carter's 6-yard TD run cut the deficit to 21-7 for Smyrna (5-1, 2-1) but Cane Ridge answered early in the fourth with a Goodloe TD run. Smyrna's Landon Miller hit Jonathan Messer on a 16-yard TD strike late in the game.

Carter, a Memphis commitment, rushed for 120 yards to lead Smyrna, which will have an open date before taking on region foe Dickson County Oct. 14.

MTCS 15, The King's Academy 12

The third-ranked Cougars (6-1, 2-0 DII-A East) jumped out to a 15-6 lead and held on late to remain perfect in region play.

Eli Wilson and Luke Scheffler each had 51 yards rushing and a touchdown for MTCS. Wilson added an interception on defense.

The Cougars had big defensive games from Brooks Jones, who had 14 tackles and a forced fumble, and Seth Harris, who had seven tackles and a fumble recovery.

The Cougars will have an open date before playing a region game at The Webb School Oct. 14.

Eagleville 14, Wayne Co. 12

The Eagles (4-3, 2-1 Region 5-1A) won their third consecutive game and second in a row in league play.

Eagleville's Jesse Brown was 11-of-21 for 171 yards and two touchdowns, with both TDs going to Cade Pippenger (four receptions for 89 yards). Elijah Fearns added six receptions for 82 yards.

Marshall Spann had 11 tackles to lead the Eagle defense. Eagleville will have an open date before getting back into region play Oct. 14 at Huntland.

Cannon Co. 30, Grundy Co. 12

The Lions (2-5, 1-1 Region 4-3A) had a big night from Ryan Perkins, who rushed 27 times for 261 yards and a touchdown.

Cannon County quarterback Kolby Miller had six carries for 51 yards and two TDs and added a passing touchdown in the win.. The Lions will play the Tennessee Heat Friday at Mt. Juliet Christian Academy.
