Multiple injuries in two-vehicle crash Saturday near Sunburg

Jun. 20—SUNBURG — Multiple people were injured in a two-vehicle crash Saturday in Arctander Township, according to a news release from the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office.

According to the release, a white 2016 Toyota Sienna minivan and a black 2016 Chrysler Town & Country minivan collided at the intersection of County Road 1 and County Road 29. When deputies arrived, both vehicles were in the northwest ditch and the Chrysler was on exposed, underground charged power lines.

The driver of the Toyota, Jairo Morales, 32, and Ligda Ramos, 31, both of Rockville, Minnesota, had to be extricated from the vehicle by mechanical means. They were flown from the scene by helicopter to a hospital with non-life-threatening serious injuries. Two juveniles in the vehicle, ages 4 and 9, were transported by ambulance with minor injuries.

The driver of the Chrysler, Aaron Nelsen, 38, and April Nelsen, 35, both of Renner, South Dakota, were transported to Carris Health — Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar for non-life-threatening injuries. Four juveniles in the vehicle, ranging in ages from 2 to 16, suffered minor injuries and were transported by ambulance.

According to the news release, the Chrysler was northbound on County Road 1 and the Toyota was westbound on County Road 29. Statements from the scene indicate the Toyota failed to yield for the stop sign at County Road 1 and the vehicles collided at highway speeds, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The crash is currently under investigation by the Sheriff's Office.

CentraCare Ambulance, Life-Link Air Ambulance, Pennock Fire Department and First Responders, Lakes Area First Responders Kandiyohi County Rescue and the Kandiyohi Power Cooperative also responded to the incident, reported at 1:10 p.m. Saturday.
