Motorcyclist killed in Santa Ynez crash

Jun. 24—A 69-year-old man from Santa Barbara was killed Thursday morning when his motorcycle struck a vehicle that turned in front of him on a Santa Ynez roadway, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash occurred about 10:45 a.m. when man, whose name was not released, was riding a 2021 BMW westbound at an unknown speed in the 4800 block of Baseline Avenue, west of Linda Vista Drive, the CHP said.

Alan Jones, 74, of Santa Ynez, who was eastbound on Baseline in a 2021 Honda, apparently failed to see the oncoming BMW and turned left into a private driveway in front of the motorcycle, according to the CHP report.

The BMW struck the Honda, ejecting the rider, who was wearing a helmet. Jones was not injured.

Santa Barbara County Fire Department responded with two engines, and the first to arrive found the motorcycle rider in cardiac arrest, said County Fire spokesman Capt. Daniel Bertucelli.

County Fire and AMR ambulance paramedics attempted to resuscitate the rider but were unsuccessful, and he was declared dead at the scene.

CalSTAR and County Sheriff's Office units also responded to the crash.

The CHP said neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be a factor in the crash, which is still under investigation, and no arrests were made.
