Morgan Weaver scores winning goal after avoiding suspension from NWSL originally appeared on NBC Sports Northwest

After a season-opening win at Providence Park that resulted in a scuffle during extra time, it appeared as if Morgan Weaver may have to miss the next game due to receiving a red card.

Instead, the NWSL reviewed the incident after the Thorns appealed the red card and the league decided Weaver did nothing worthy of a suspension.

With the victory, Portland advances to 2-0-0 in 2021 Challenge Cup play and stays atop of the West division with six points. No other team has more than a point as of the publishing of this piece.

Additionally, Meagan Nally made her NWSL debut with a late substitution, Celeste Boureille collected her first assist of 2021, while Adrianna Franch recorded her first clean sheet since the 2019 season.

Next up, the Thorns will play heated rival OL Reign on Wednesday, April 21 at 7:00 p.m. PT on CBS Sports Network at Providence Park.
