The federal government is making additional at-home COVID-19 tests available free to the public.

This time around, each household will receive eight tests. The test kits will come in two separate packages.

When the home tests were first made free to the public in January and February, only four tests were allotted to each household.

Residents began receiving notices in the mail on Thursday that the tests are now available and can be ordered online. The Biden administration announced the availability of the free tests kits Monday.

The White House COVID-19 Response Team said Wednesday that COVID-19 cases are rising again in the United States. Dr. Ashish Jha, White House coronavirus coordinator, said the U.S. is "seeing a lot of infections across the country. Depending on which tracker you use we are at about 100,000 infections a day."

Jha said there a lot of infections across the U.S. and what is driving the cases is more contagious variants being out there.

In the Rio Grande Valley, 122 cases of coronavirus were reported Wednesday. There were 55 new infections in Cameron County, 35 in Hidalgo County, eight in Starr County and 13 in Willacy County.
