Mon Health, DEP agree on terms for hazardous waste violations in 2017, 2019

Jun. 12—MORGANTOWN — Mon Health Medical Center has reached a settlement agreement with the state Department of Environmental Protection regarding violations of the Hazardous Waste Management Act that occurred in 2017 and 2019. DEP announced the settlement in a consent order published Friday.

DEP cited a total of 18 violations, nine in each year. Six dealt with paperwork, six with labeling and six with other issues, such as storage.

Through settlement talks, DEP and Mon Health agreed to a civil penalty of $12, 040 for the violations.

According to the DEP consent order, the first inspection was conducted in March 2017. The following month, Mon General as it was called then, demonstrated that the violations were addressed and it had returned to compliance.

The next inspection was in November 2019. In April of this year, DEP and Mon Health representatives met and discussed terms and conditions of the settlement order. Mon Health submitted a Plan of Corrective Action on April 28 and DEP approved it.
