A mom is fed up with her family’s refusal to do household chores.
The frustrated mother decided to ditch her family for a week for a solo trip. But now she’s wondering if it was the right move and went on Reddit’s “Am I the A******” forum to get a verdict. She explained that she has been at her wit’s end for a year but her family just won’t budge.
“I am a 34-year-old stay-at-home mom,” she said. “I gave up my career as a nurse to support our family on the homefront while my husband is a doctor. I can’t say I like it but I’m able to help my kids with distance learning and I’m fully in charge of our home. I have four kids.”
The couple’s children are between ages 6 and 11. Each family member has assigned chores.
“I take on probably about 80 percent of the work including all of the deep cleaning, cooking, meal planning, errands and financial planning,” she wrote. “Well, getting anyone to actually do anything is a completely different story so I usually end up having to do everyone else’s chores too. A few weeks ago, I finally broke. No one helps, no one gives me a break. I haven’t had a day off since the twins were born! I told my family I was done after begging for help for over a year!”
But this where the mother wonders if she made the wrong choice. She booked herself a week-long vacation in a secluded cabin a mile away. Mind you, her husband has taken similar vacations with short notice and she gave three weeks advance. The mother also arranged for childcare while she is away.
“I will be going alone and would only be reachable in an emergency,” she said. “I also told them I expect my house in close to the same condition I left it in and they will have to cook and clean for the time I’m gone. I’ve been getting the silent treatment ever since I told them and my husband is pissed.”
Reddit users were in support of the mother taking a vacation.
“Parents need time off. Especially stay-at-home parents,” one user wrote.
“Enjoy the hell out of that vacation, you’ve obviously earned it,” another said.
“You are more than deserving to have your break and holiday alone,” someone added.
