Blue Jays pitching coach Pete Walker pleads not guilty after DUI arrest

Toronto Blue Jays pitching coach Pete Walker pleaded not guilty on Monday following his arrest for a DUI charge last week, according to court documents obtained by Sportsnet's Arden Zwelling. Walker waived his appearance at a pre-trial conference and entered the plea through his lawyer.

Walker was pulled over early Friday morning after driving 82 mph in a 45-mph zone in Oldsmar, Fla., not far from the Blue Jays' spring training home in Dunedin. An affidavit obtained by Zwelling indicates the 52-year-old "showed signs of impairment, including poor balance, bloodshot eyes, and a 'strong odour of alcoholic beverage coming from his breath.'” He admitted to authorities that he drank four beers that evening and was later released on bond.

The Massachusetts native issued a statement on Saturday showing remorse for his dangerous actions.

"I'm very apologetic to the Blue Jays organization, Blue Jays fans and my family," Walker said. "I'm working with my attorney to get resolution to this right now. My apologies to my three daughters as well. Right now, we're working through that with my attorney for resolution and that is the only comment I'll have right now."

The Blue Jays released a brief statement over the weekend but will have no further comment as the legal process plays out.

Since the incident, Walker has remained with the club as it continues its spring training schedule and it is unknown whether the Blue Jays will dole out a suspension. Manager Charlie Montoyo was asked about possible punishment and said "we’re gathering information, so we’ll see."

Walker has served as Blue Jays pitching coach since 2012 and has earned a strong reputation for his work on the field in recent years, most recently with Robbie Ray's transformation from a talented-but-erratic pitcher into a Cy Young winner.

Toronto opens its 2022 campaign hosting the Texas Rangers on April 8.
