Mitchell Kernels finish busy week with second-place finish at Yankton Invitational
May 8—YANKTON — The Mitchell High School girls golf team capped off a busy week on Friday.
The Kernels, playing in their third meet since Tuesday, finished second at the Yankton Invitational at Hillcrest Golf Country Club.
Mitchell shot a 343, while Class AA power Sioux Falls O'Gorman (335) captured the team title. The Kernels were also nipped by O'Gorman by five strokes at Thursday's Huron Invitational. Mitchell also played at the Yankton Triangular on Tuesday.
"I think they learned a lot this week," Mitchell assistant coach Jeff Meyerink said. "Three tournaments is a lot for them to handle in a week, but they performed as well as I could have expected them to. Today was a little bit of a tougher course than we have seen thus far, but they all handled it really well."
Sioux Falls O'Gorman's Shannon McCormick claimed individual medalist honors with a 75. Harrisburg's Reese Jansa (79) and O'Gorman's Lauren Sutcliffe (80) finished second and third, respectively.
Quinn Dannenbring shot an 83 and finished fifth. She fired a 39 on the front nine, including four pars and one birdie. She added three pars and another birdie on the back nine.
"I know she's itching to get back out there for the next one," Meyerink said. "She feels like she left a couple out there. I watched her coming down the stretch there and she was just hitting quality shot after quality shot to get it into the clubhouse. I was really proud of her for the way she performed."
Allison Meyerink and Masy Mock shot 86s and tied for seventh place. Ella Flippin tied for 12th place with an 88. Jayli Reints (97) and Lara Widstrom (105) rounded out Mitchell's scores.
The Kernels will host Yankton for the Marchand Cup on Tuesday at Lakeview Golf Course. They will host the Mitchell Invitational on May 14 at Lakeview.
"We are looking forward to the Mitchell Invite next week and the girls want to be ready for that," coach Meyerink said. "I know a lot of them are already making plans for the weekend and get some practice and prep time in."
