Mitchell girls basketball survives late Spearfish run, sweeps West River trip

Feb. 4—SPEARFISH, S.D. — The Mitchell girls basketball team held off a fourth-quarter comeback effort from Spearfish to nail down a 56-52 win over the Spartans on the road Saturday.

A strong second quarter in which the Kernels outscored Spearfish 22-9 proved critical, as the Spartans clawed back from down 13 to start the fourth quarter, bringing the game to within two in the late stages of the final quarter.

Spearfish started the fourth quarter on an 11-0 run before Carsyn Weich got the first Kernel points of the frame on a pair of free throws with 1:38 remaining. Sawyer Stoebner also knocked down two free throws to extend Mitchell's lead and secure the win. The four free throws were the only points of the quarter for Mitchell.

Addie Siemsen led the Kernels in scoring, pouring in 20 points, including 11 in the second quarter. She added seven rebounds and knocked down seven of her 12 field-goal attempts and went 6-for-9 from 3-point range.

During the second quarter, Mitchell went on a 14-2 run, turning a tie game into a 12-point advantage. Stoebner accounted for four points during the run, while Siemsen picked up five points during the stretch.

Stoebner racked up 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals, while Weich tacked on six points and Maddie Kempf added five.

As a team, Mitchell shot 47.6% (20 of 42) from the floor and 50% (8 of 16) from 3-point range. The Kernels assisted on 13 of their 20 made field goals and came away with seven steals in the win.

The Kernels moved to 8-6 with the win, wrapping up their two-game West River trip at 2-0 and will take on Aberdeen Central at home on Tuesday, Feb. 7 for their next contest.
