Mitchell area Halloween events are on tap to run through October

Oct. 22—Ghosts, goblins and vampires in and around the Mitchell area should have plenty of opportunities next week to head out and have some fun as the Halloween season goes into full swing.

A number of organizations in Mitchell and surrounding communities, ranging from churches, civic service organizations and school clubs, are hosting a variety of Halloween-themed events beginning next week. Events range from trunk or treats to haunted houses and trails and everything in between.

Following is a list of activities going on that should keep even the spookiest of ghouls entertained:

Mitchell

Annual Trunk or Treat, Saturday, Oct. 23, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Mitchell Middle School parking lot. This free event will provide a safe trick or treating opportunity for children in 2nd grade and younger. Contact Ryan Pryor at 995-7611 for more information.

DWU Haunted House Fundraiser, Thursday, Oct. 28 through Sunday, Oct. 31 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. each evening in the Black Box Theatre located in the Dakota Discovery Museum. Admission $5 at the door. The event will be staged by the Department of Theatre at Dakota Wesleyan University as a fundraiser for the school theatre department. This is a "non-touch" scare house. Patrons will make their way through the house on their own or may ask for a helper to follow. The entire scene will be accessible with ramps. Individuals sensitive to loud sounds and strobe lighting are cautioned in advance.

Phobia: A Haunted Trail of Fears, Thursday, Oct. 28 through Sunday, Oct. 31 from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at Reclamation Ranch, 40787 259th St. in Mitchell. This event is rated PG-13 — anyone under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult. The nighttime trail hours are not recommended for children. Tickets are $10. Kid-friendly showing 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31. Freewill donations accepted. The haunted trail is an outdoor event led by guides in groups. All proceeds benefit Helping With Horsepower.

Downtown Mitchell's Main Street Trick or Treat, Saturday, Oct. 30 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Main Street in Mitchell. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to downtown Mitchell to visit participating businesses for special treats. Watch for fliers in the windows of participating businesses.

Armour

Haunted Halloween in the Library, Saturday, Oct. 30 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Armour High School Library. This event is designed for ages 5 through 12. Adults are also welcome. Walkthroughs are $2 each, with unlimited walk-throughs for $10.

Chamberlain

Chamberlain Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization Halloween Carnival, Saturday, Oct. 30, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chamberlain Community Center. Tickets are 50 cents at the door. A lunch special will be available. A costume contest sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Chamberlain at 1 p.m. with Chamber Bucks prizes for first, second and third place. Categories will be based on age and grade in school.

Kimball

Trunk or Treat, Wednesday, Oct. 27 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Kimball Protestant Parish parking lot. The event is sponsored by the Kimball Protestant Youth.

Haunted Trail, Wednesday, Oct. 27 from 7:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. at the Native Prairie Gardens. A freewill offering will be taken during this spooky adventure.

Mount Vernon

Trunk or Treat, Sunday, Oct. 31 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., in the Mount Vernon School parking lot. A movie, The Great Pumpkin, will follow at 7:35 p.m. with an expected conclusion time of 8:10 p.m. The event is free to attend.

Parkston

Trunk or Treat, Sunday, Oct. 31 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Main Street in Parkston. Those interested in participating with a trunk should call Ember at 605-928-4410.

Legion of Doom Haunted House, Thursday, Oct. 28 through Sunday, Oct. 31, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 211 W. Main Street, Parkston. There is a $10 admission fee.

Plankinton

Trunk or Treat, Sunday, Oct. 31 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Plankinton United Methodist Church parking lot. Setup begins at 3 p.m.

Platte

Costume Walk, Friday, Oct. 29. The event will be at the Platte Care Center from 2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., at Twilight Vista and TLC from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. and at downtown businesses marked with a jack-o-lantern in their window or on their door beginning at 4 p.m.

Springfield

High Stakes Bingo and Costume Contest, Saturday, Oct. 30, 7 p.m. at the Springfield Community Center. Admission price of $20 gets two hard cards. Bring in five non-perishable food items and receive three free soft cards. Sponsored by the Springfield Chamber of Commerce.

Wessington Springs

Trail of Fears, Friday, Oct. 29 through Sunday, Oct. 31 on the Old Grade Trail. Goblins Beware, a lighter show for kids aged for younger visitors, will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Stay If You Dare, the standard presentation, will take place from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
