Missed kicks loom large in history of Cardinals-Patriots

The Arizona Cardinals face the New England Patriots Monday night at State Farm Stadium. A number of key factors will determine who wins the game, as naturally is the case.

The Pats have won two straight in the all-time series and lead 8-7 all-time.

But the last three games the two teams have played have come down to a missed field goal, suggesting that perhaps the game could come down to the kicking game.

In 2020, a 20-17 win by the Patriots, Arizona’s Zane Gonzalez missed a potential go-ahead 42-yard field goal with 1:47 left in the game. Making that kick would have give them a 20-17 lead and would have forced the Pats, who had only 179 total yards for the whole game offensively, to march down the field for at least a tie.

The Pats made a 50-yard field goal as time expired after the missed kick.

In 2016, the game came down to a 47-yard field goal by Chandler Catanzaro. Trailing 23-21, Catanzaro missed the field goal and the Cardinals lost the game.

In 2012, the Cardinals won the game 20-18 after Stephen Gostkowski misses a 42-yard field goal with five seconds left in the game.

Will this game come down to a missed kick by either Matt Prater of the Cardinals or Nick Folk?

It wouldn’t be a surprise.
