The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has confirmed simultaneous reports from ESPN and The Athletic that the Milwaukee Bucks and free agent DeMarcus Cousins have agreed to come together on a non-guaranteed, one-year deal.

Cousins, 31, last played for the Los Angeles Clippers at the end of last season.

He has been a free agent this year.

As center Brook Lopez continues to recover from what has been deemed back soreness, the Bucks have been shorthanded in the front court all season. Cousins is 6 feet-10 inches and 270 pounds.

Lopez has missed 20 straight games, leaving the Bucks to go with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis at the “five” position, though the pair have started together 10 times. Portis had missed five games to start the year.

After the Bucks won their seventh straight game over Indiana on Sunday night, head coach Mike Budenholzer was asked if the team could use some front court depth as they wait on Lopez.

“We’re playing Giannis and Bobby really as our two bigs right now so I think just when you look at the depth chart and look at how we’re subbing and everything, depth at the big position is something that we could use,” Budenholzer said. “But I love the way the group’s playing, the way they’re competing. The smalls are doing a good job defensively and then offensively I think they give us something that’s really hard to guard. But Bobby’s spacing is really kind of similar. The group is playing well. I’m pleased with them but we need to keep it going.”

The No. 5 overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft, Cousins is a two-time All-NBA player and a four-time all-star, though his last appearance in the midseason exhibition was 2017-18 in New Orleans. He has played for five teams and has averaged 20.4 points and 10.6 rebounds for his career.

Cousins last averaged a double-double in that all-star season for the Pelicans (25.2 points, 12.9 rebounds) while playing 48 games.

He is not the floor-spacer Lopez and Portis have become, however, as a career 33.4% three-point shooter, though he did make 42% of his threes off the bench for the Clippers last year.
