WASHINGTON – Former Vice President Mike Pence said he and his lawyers are mulling over a request from the Justice Department to talk about Donald Trump and the insurrection of Jan. 6, 2021.
"We've come to no resolution," Pence told Fox News Sunday in an interview taped on Thursday.
Pence, who is considering a presidential campaign of his own against Trump in 2024, did not detail the Justice Department's request, saying only that "there has been some contact."
Pence interview:Exclusive: Mike Pence predicts 'better choices,' not Trump, as the GOP's 2024 nominee
The former vice president has refused to speak with the special congressional committee investigating Jan. 6. Pence said he does not believe Congress is entitled to details about his private interactions with the president.
The Jan. 6 insurrection included threats to Pence's life after he refused Trump's demand that he set aside certain electoral votes that elected Joe Biden to the presidency."
In his Fox interview, Pence repeated that "I had no right to overturn the election," and that he was angry at Trump for making that demand and putting his life in danger. Still, he defended Trump's overall record in office, although he did not endorse the ex-president's recently announced 2024 campaign. Pence said he thinks the GOP will have "better choices" than Trump as the party's next presidential nominee.
