Midland women beat South Plains, tie WJCAC race

MIDLAND — Levelland graduate Makayla Escue scored five or her 10 points in overtime, helping Midland College beat South Plains College 69-61 Monday night and leave the two teams tied for the lead in Western Junior College Athletic Conference women's basketball.

The Lady Chaparrals rallied from a 56-51 deficit in the last 2:33 of regulation.

Escue's 3-point goal gave Midland a 59-56 lead in the first minute of overtime at the Chaparral Center, and her two free throws with 18 seconds left provided the final margin.

Midland (15-4, 6-1) won its sixth game in a row. South Plains (12-6, 6-1) lost for the first time in seven games.

Ashala Moseberry and Viktoria Ivanova led the Lady Texans with 13 points apiece, and Celia Sumbane had 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Midland got 12 points from Bella Green and 11 apiece from Dana Thompson, Marin Lenz and Brooke Galvin.

MIDLAND — Eric Coleman and D.J. Avery scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, and South Plains College downed Midland College for its fifth win in six games.

Avery also had a game-high 13 rebounds.

Marcus Burnett added 10 points and Kieves Turner nine for South Plains (12-8, 6-2), which bounced back from a 92-63 loss Thursday at No. 16 Odessa College, the WJCAC leader.

Steven Richardson and Oliver Hayward scored 15 points apiece for Midland (10-11, 3-5).
