Midland man killed in box truck crash Wednesday in Yoakum County

YOAKUM COUNTY — A Midland man was killed and another man was injured after the box truck they were traveling in crashed near Plains during Wednesday morning's rain showers.

According to a preliminary report from the Texas Department of Public Safety, 40-year-old Manuel Rafael Ortega of Midland was driving a 2014 International DuraStar truck westbound on U.S. Highway 380 eight miles west of Plains about 6:40 a.m. Wednesday when the truck lost control on the wet road, crossed the eastbound lanes and rolled before coming to rest in a ditch south of the roadway.

Ortega was pronounced dead on scene by a justice of the peace. The passenger in the truck, 37-year-old Jose Antonio Perez Ramirez of Odessa, was injured and transported to Yoakum County Hospital, where he was treated and released. Both men were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
