Mid-East League high school girls basketball team starting season. Here's what their coaches expect.

We talked to Mid-East League coaches for breakdowns on their teams, their top players to replace, their top returning players, key position battles and new players that could make an impact this season along with their outlook and schedules for this season.

Riley County

Last season: 16-5

Top players to replace: Jessi Brummett (Forward; 14pts, 6 rebounds), Ames Burton; Center (10 pts, 8 rebounds), Kaytrin McGuire (Forward; 5pts, 3 rebounds)

Top returning players: CJ Rignell (5’7, Jr., PG, 10pts, 3 assists, 1st Team All-League, 3 year starter, 3A-Honorable Mention)

Other returning players, players that could contribute: Hailey Sharp (5’10, SR., Forward, 3 pts), Lindsey Roles (5’11, SR., Forward), Taryn Shepard (5’7, SO., Guard)

First-year head coach Kelsey Nelson: After losing a very valuable senior class we have several players eager and ready for their opportunity to get on the court more. Every night will be a challenge for us, but we will come prepared and ready to work.

Ninth-year head coach Michael Bell: We look to build and get better every day. Low numbers out for basketball but we do have quite a bit of experience coming back. Last year with COVID was a mess, we are looking forward to getting back to normal. We want to play fast but under control. I really look for us to take some significant strides this year. Our top three scorers and rebounders are back from last year, we will be led by Perine and Mitchell.

Season outlook: Team loses starting point guard Morgan Hurla to knee injury in volleyball. Five games last year lost by five points or less. 7-3 when scoring 50 or more points, 5-0 when scoring 60 or more points. The team will have to replace Schindler and Harrison, last years only post players and will look to bring along their youth while playing uptempo.

Third-year head coach Trevor Keller: We have a group of players returning that played significant minutes for us last season. We will need to get high percentage shots and limit turnovers on the offensive end. Defensively we will rely on our overall team speed and quickness to make up for our lack of height.
