Mid-American Conference basketball restricting attendance to start season

The Mid-American Conference announced on Tuesday that the general public will not be admitted to any men's or women's basketball games until further notice.

The conference said in a statement that each student-athlete will get four tickets for family members for each game. But no tickets will be sold at this time.

"The participation of the Pep Band, Dance, Cheer and Spirit Squads at basketball games will be guided by Conference protocols at institutional discretion," the statement said.

The MAC also said these protocols are subject to federal, state and local guidelines, so different schools may have more strict rules to follow. In Michigan, the emergency order banning any fans at sporting events is in effect until Dec. 9.

The conference also said it will evaluate their attendance policy throughout the season.

The college basketball season begins this week. Central Michigan's men's team opens at home on Wednesday against Trine (Ind.) and its women's team's first home game is Dec. 12 against Cincinnati. The Eastern Michigan women host UIC on Sunday and the men's team has its first home game Dec. 4 against Toledo. For Western Michigan, the men host Trine on Saturday and the women host UIC on Dec. 5.
