Wounded MSP trooper from Monroe has awakened; can 'communicate'

Follow up:Wounded state police sergeant identified, two suspects arraigned in Detroit

The Michigan State Police trooper who was shot during a surveillance mission in Detroit is from Monroe.

Officials have not released his name, but it has been confirmed to The Monroe News that he grew up in Monroe with a law enforcement background.

Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw of the Second District said the condition of the trooper has been upgraded to stable condition. He said he has awakened and has his family by his side.

"He is able to communicate," Shaw said. "He faces surgery later this week and still has a long way to go."

Since the shooting, many members of the Monroe County law enforcement community as well as the public have offered support and prayers for the trooper and his family.

"I've been living here for 18 years and this community is a very supportive of law enforcement," said Lt. Stephen Borello, commander of the Monroe post. "And I'm not surprised at all. We do see that support more frequently than not."

Borello said local law enforcement officials from all ranks and agencies have contacted him with support, while Shaw said officials from across the state have contacted him.

"There are people who care about law enforcement officials and it's a great feeling, especially in this climate," Borello said.

According to law enforcement officials, the trooper is a 10-year veteran of the force. He was working as an undercover narcotics trooper conducting surveillance in the 14000 block of Riverview in Detroit when he came under fire about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Two suspects have been arrested. The trooper was rushed to a local hospital where he had been listed initially in critical condition. Shaw said he expects the two to be arraigned Thursday or Friday.

The area of the shooting is near Telegraph Road and I-96. MSP officials reported on twitter that they had evacuated an apartment building where the shooter appeared to be in hiding. They attempted "to make contact with any suspects located in the building from where the shots may have been fired."

The apartment building was searched, gun casings were found and two suspects were taken into custody. Shaw said the trooper being gunned down is another example of people needlessly turning to violence.

"People just shoot at people," Shaw said. "It has become too common for every dispute to be settled with gunfire."

He said the troopers are continuing to do their job despite the shooting because they understand the dangers they face on a daily basis. The investigation into the shooting is continuing.
