Michigan State football loses LB Devin Hightower to NCAA transfer portal

As Michigan State football welcomed a new batch of players this week, the Spartans saw another member of the team begin the process of leaving.

Redshirt freshman linebacker Devin Hightower submitted his name to the NCAA transfer portal Tuesday.

The former three-star recruit from Twinsburg, Ohio, appeared in one game last season and played seven snaps — all on special teams — in a blowout loss to Ohio State.

The 5-foot-11, 225-pound Hightower is the 27th Michigan State player to enter the portal since November and is the sixth member of the 2020 signing class to leave the program after the conclusion of spring practice last month.

The departures have been offset by the wave of mid-career college players who have joined the Spartans in recent days. Eleven transfers, including nine on scholarship, were added to the fold. Included among the new arrivals were former Tennessee and Michigan linebackers Quavaris Crouch and Ben VanSumeren.

In total, the Spartans received commitments from 18 transfers since the end of last season. Six of them enrolled in January and participated in spring practice with Michigan State.
