Michigan football predictions vs. Indiana: Any chance for an upset in Bloomington?

Free Press sports writers share their predictions on the Michigan Wolverines' game against Indiana on Saturday (noon, Fox) in Bloomington:

Michael Cohen

A better quarterback than the Hoosiers had last season probably won’t make much difference for a team with considerably less talent in the trenches and at the skill positions. There’s no reason to think Jim Harbaugh’s bunch will be troubled. The Wolverines should cruise into the showdown against Penn State with their undefeated record intact. The pick: Michigan 47, Indiana 23.

Carlos Monarrez

Indiana has beaten Michigan once since 1987. But that was during the 2020 COVID season when few people actually saw it, which means it really didn't happen. What will happen is J.J. McCarthy and the Wolverines offense will shred the Hoosiers' defense and only Harbaugh's decency and level-headed self-control will keep this from looking more like a basketball score. The pick: Michigan 40, Indiana 23.

The last time Michigan went to Bloomington the Wolverines suffered their first loss to the Hoosiers in 33 years. But that was when U-M plummeted to its lowest point in a long time and Indiana had ascended to its highest. Since then, the natural order has been restored, which should become even more evident Saturday when Michigan rolls into Memorial Stadium and pummels Tom Allen’s squad. The pick: Michigan 38, Indiana 10.

Michigan will win this game. The Wolverines will have no trouble running the ball against the Hoosiers. But Indiana will throw the ball so much — sometimes failing, but sometimes succeeding just enough that there will be questions about Michigan’s pass defense. You’ll walk away thinking: “Yeah, it was a win. But they can’t do that against Ohio State or even Penn State.” The pick: Michigan 37, Indiana 14.

The J.J. Express continues as the Wolverines run through the Big Ten. The Hoosiers have been plucky pests in the past, but not this season. U-M is picking up steam. It won’t be close. The pick: Michigan 34, Indiana 16.
