Michigan basketball's Juwan Howard did not have an update on Monday morning about the status of Eli Brooks, who left Sunday's loss at Michigan State with a left ankle injury.

“I’m sorry, I don’t have an update for you right now,” Howard said. “I haven’t had a chance to speak to our trainer Alex Wong. So after we finish this Zoom, I’ll have some more media appointments, but this afternoon, I will lock in and hear what’s the new update.

“Hopefully it’s some great news. Because I feel for Eli. I know how badly he really wants to be out there for his team and being a senior, with the Big Ten Tournament coming up, every player wants to be ready to play and compete in this tournament, and I know Eli’s No. 1. He’s one of the toughest competitors there is.”

The senior guard suffered the injury at the 15:38 mark of the first half. While scoring on an up-and-under move, Brooks' left foot landed on Marcus Bingham's foot and rolled over. The injury was immediately apparent, as play was halted and Brooks was helped off the floor by Howard and Wong. He later entered the locker room and was ruled out for the remainder of the game before returning to the bench with a walking boot on his left foot.

Brooks has started 51 games the past two seasons. He is averaging 8.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.1 steals. He previously missed a Jan. 16 contest at Minnesota with a right foot strain. U-M suffered its first loss of the season that day.

The Wolverines' next game is on Friday in the Big Ten tournament against either Maryland (No. 8 seed) or Michigan State (No. 9).

“Eli, you know he’s a warrior,” said Isaiah Livers on Sunday night. “Twisted his ankle, I didn’t get to see the replay but had to be bad if Eli can’t get back out there. … Hopefully we get him back in time for the tournament.”
