This Michigan State basketball vs. Michigan basketball game takes a bit of a different hue than the last meeting in March 2021.

Then, it was MSU trying to build an NCAA tournament-worthy resume and its chief rival, ranked in the top five, was a prime candidate to help boost the Spartans. This year, U-M could use a win over 10th-ranked MSU to bolster the Wolverines' postseason hopes.

Turnovers continue to plague Michigan State, which has lost two of three, including a nail-biter Tuesday vs. a shorthanded Illinois team. Michigan, on the other hand, pulled out a close comeback at home vs. Northwestern for its third consecutive win.

Gabe Brown is MSU's top scorer at 13.4 points per game on 42% shooting from the floor and 37% from 3-point range. Hunter Dickinson leads Michigan with 16.5 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.

The rivals have split the series the past two years, meaning Michigan's Juwan Howard is 2-2 as coach. U-M was 5-1 vs. MSU in Howard's days as a player (though some of those early 1990s wins were later vacated). But since MSU coach Tom Izzo took over in 1995, the Spartans have the advantage in the rivalry.

The last sweep went in favor of MSU during the 2018-19 season, which ended in a Final Four appearance for the Spartans; Michigan swept the two games the season before that.

Next up for the Spartans is a Tuesday road game vs. Maryland. Michigan plays Tuesday at home vs. Nebraska.
