Miami passes on wearing black neon Adidas uniforms for finale, chooses tradition instead

The Miami Hurricanes chose not to break out their all-black Adidas “Miami Nights” uniforms for their final regular-season game against Pittsburgh on Saturday night at Hard Rock Stadium.

Instead, the Canes and coach Mario Cristobal went for traditional orange and white.

It’s Senior Night for the Canes, who learned of their newest all-black alternative uniforms this past August when Adidas released a 45-second video introducing them to fans.

UM coach Mario Cristobal, a former Hurricane and two-time national champion in the team’s heyday, is a fan of tradition and likes orange jerseys and white pants for home games. The Canes, however, wore green this season at Hard Rock Stadium against Duke, the game in which quarterback Tyler Van Dyke injured his shoulder and UM lost.

The “Neon Lights, Miami Nights’’ video, when adidas publicly introduced the uniforms, showed all black with neon-orange-trimmed jerseys and neon-lime jersey numbers.

The black helmets have one thin neon-orange strip and one thin neon-green strip with what appears to be a thick, lighter shade of blue strip in between. The word Miami is written in script on the front of the helmet.

UM cornerback Tyrique Stevenson was asked recently if it mattered what type of uniform players wear and if players feel any different depending on the uniform.

“I too much don’t pay attention to that. I just show up and honestly just want to show out. To me, and I feel like to this team, it honestly don’t matter what we wear. We want to go out and be the best team. We want to be the most well-prepared team. We want to dominate every aspect of the game, despite the uniform. Because at the end of the day, we out there running around and just because our uniform is a different color don’t mean that [much]. We gotta go out there and earn everything.’’
